Description: FIRST EDITION, tissue-guarded frontispiece by Ilbery Lynch, some light foxing, pp. 316, [4, ads], crown 8vo, original red cloth, backstrip and upper board lettered in gilt, the former with border decoration in gilt, this in blind to upper board, edges spotted with a few faint spots to rear endpapers, publisher's slip laid in at front, dustjacket repeating Lynch's frontispiece design, a few corners slightly chipped, a few tiny nicks, but a remarkably bright example, very good

Notes: The fifth of the author's 'lightly plotted love stories [...]: frivolous and witty, but with an underlying sense of melancholy [...] also important for their closely detailed depictions of the fashions and tastes of the Edwardian age' with 'vignettes of eccentric personalities' (ODNB). Leverson writes with a ready wit of contemporary mores and manners - there are references to the Italian Futurism and Russian ballet then preoccupying intellectual circles. The author had been dubbed 'The Sphinx' by Oscar Wilde, to whom she was a faithful friend. A superb copy....more
