Description: title-pages printed in brown and red, frontispieces (most with tissue-guards and a little off-set browning therefrom to title-pages), further tissue-guarded plates, occasional light foxing, foolscap 8vo, original pale green cloth, the lettering and decorations to backstrips and upper boards stamped in gilt, backstrips a little darkened and some light handling, slight lean to spine in some cases, a little bubbling to cloth at upper joint on a couple of volumes, t.e.g., edges untrimmed and a little toned, printed ex-libris to front pastedowns, the third volume with pencilled ownership inscription thereto, free endpapers lightly browned, a very good set

Notes: An attractive set of 'the first really independent issue of the novels - Bentley's edition having previously held the field. Mr. Johnson, as a rule, followed the text of the latest editions which appeared in the authors lifetime. Unfortunately, his printers introduced a good many new misprints of their own' (Austen-Leigh, 'Life...', quoted in Gilson). The set was not in fact issued as such, but title by title, and reprinted; the volumes here are either the fifth or sixth 'issue', all falling within a two-year span....more
