Notes: Churchill writes: 'Dear Mrs. Sheppard, Thank you so much for sending me the beautiful roses on my Birthday. It was very kind of you. I hope that all will continue to go so well with you and your little daughter'. The recipient was Joanna Sheppard, who, with her husband Ivan, both of them nurses, was amongst Churchill's personal medical team - living with him at Chartwell. The signature betrays the failing health of the Prime Minister's later years.
