She also published novels under the name Ellington Gray. Her appearance was flamboyantly masculine, and her partners female – among the friends gathered in her varied career were Marie Lloyd and Radclyffe Hall, and she appeared for the defence of Hall's novel 'The Well of Loneliness' in 1928.
