Notes: The author provides a thorough response to various queries prepared by his French translator, Robert Pépin, whose 3pp. typed letter to Lee is also present in the original envelope. This was the first translation of Lee's work to be published in full in France. In his letter, Pépin explains that he has tried to call but - thankfully in respect of the existence of this document - it was a bad line, so he is sending via mail 'a lot of questions' to allow him to complete his work, apologising that 'some of them will seem very silly but then... translators are very silly people'.
