Description: sketches and notes throughout (only a handful of leaves blank), all in pencil, including designs for initial letters and covers, as well as the various illustrations, figure studies, the drawings interspersed with Keen's notes (including bibliographies for research), drafts of letters regarding proofs, each circa 120pp., 4to, green cloth notebooks, one with spine heavily worn, good condition overall

Notes: Henry Keen, born 1899, died of tuberculosis at the age of 36, leaving behind a small but striking body of work as an illustrator: 'The Twilight of the Gods' by Richard Garnett, 'The Picture of Dorian Gray', 'Zadig and Other Romances' by Voltaire, 'The Duchess of Malfi' and 'The White Devil' by John Webster, all originally published by John Lane. His work bears traces of the influence of Sime, Beardsley, and the Symbolists, but Keen's style is distinctive and assured.
