Description: FIRST EDITION, 24 full-page lithographs printed in colours and a large wood-engraved title-page design incorporating the title lettering, all by Eric Ravilious, a few small spots to title-page verso, pp. 104, 8vo., original illustrated boards with an overall design incorporating the lettering by Ravilious, light edge rubbing, the corners a little pushed, shallow chip at head of backstrip, a couple of tiny and faint spots to endpapers (but not the usual foxing), very good

Notes: In nicer state than commonly met with. Begun as an 'Alphabet of Shops', and offered to the Golden Cockerel Press in 1935 in order to replace an idea for a book on gardening which had been initially proposed, the idea for which Ravilious did not relish. Shops were in Ravilious's blood - his father had run a drapers and later an antiques shop, and his eye for their idiosyncrasies is evident. His friend J.M. Richards was asked to supply the text which was aimed at children as well as adults, and the title was supplied by Gwyneth Lloyd-Thomas, a friend of Edward Bawden's wife Charlotte....more
