Description: manuscript in ink on paper watermarked C&S 1801, vol. ii only, written in a fine copperplate hand, with 30 folding plates, of which however only 10 are completed, 9 of them with coloured highlights, pp. [203 (the last 2 leaves ruled, / for an Index)], plus 16 blank leaves, 8vo, contemporary tree sheep, spine with gilt rules either side of raised bands, red lettering piece, small circular green numbering piece, a few abrasions, joints cracked at foot, good, ownership inscription in pencil on fly-leaf of Sir William Drummond MacDonald Paton ('W.D.M.Paton, 1982)

Notes: A very attractive book, albeit an odd volume. The plates are curious, in so far as the presence uncompleted ones in the bound volume suggests that they were intended for completion in situ. The opening sections are on electricity and magnetism, then we move on to optics, lenses, telescopes, &c. At the end of Sir William Paton's ODNB article, after a lengthy review of his scientific career, it is mentioned that he was 'a passionate bibliophile with a special interest in the history of science': this volume is certainly proof of that.
