The recipient was a Harvard Professor of Geography, whose work focused on the Amazon Basin region - making him a natural acquaintance of the author, an eminent Venezuelan soldier. Nogales recounts his experience as a soldier for hire in various wars, including against the Allies for the Ottoman Army in the Great War.
