Notes: Lilian Mary Faithfull was played an important role in the field of women's education in the latter decade of the nineteenth and the first two decades of the twentieth-century - having gone up to Somerville College, Oxford, she had obtained a first class in English Language and Literature in 1887 at a time when women were still barred from graduating; there followed a long spell as Vice-Principal of the Ladies' Department at King's College, London, where she was able to effect a real sea-change for her charges, in the transition 'from passive lecture attendance to the pursuit of courses of stu...more
