Notes: An account of the region contemporary with that of Evelyn Waugh - who conjured the memorable description of Steer as a 'very gay South African dwarf'. Their allegiances and outlooks were at odds, and whilst both used their experiences as the basis for important books, as Nicholas Rankin notes, 'Waugh's novel Scoop saw the conflict as a comedy; Steer's Caesar in Abyssinia as a tragedy' (p. 10).
