Description: FIRST EDITION, plates as listed and full-page map preceding Index, title-page printed in red and black, half-title browned and occasional light foxing, pp. xiv, 237, 4to, original green cloth lettered in gilt to upper board and backstrip with Corfe Castle crest stamped in gilt to former, a couple of light marks, bump to top corners, t.e.g. with others untrimmed and toned, bookplate of Humphry Gifford (see below) to front pastedown with small bookseller sticker (H.V. Day of Dorset) at foot of same, good

Notes: With a gift inscription to the flyleaf: 'Thomas Hardy from John Lane, with many happy recollections of Purbeck'. The subsequent owner was a relative of Hardy's first wife, Emma Gifford, with a statement to this effect - accompanying a general statement to certify provenance - on the bookseller's headed paper laid in, along with a couple of other Hardy-related clippings.
