Notes: Inscribed on the flyleaf: 'à Madame Ludmile de Sawwitzki, hommage respecteux de Paul Eluard'. An early work, and the signature in his early hand - a year before his 'butterfly' signature was developed. The recipient is Ludmila Savitzky, translator into French of - among others - work by Joyce ('Dedalus') and John Rodker ('Dartmoor', 'Montagnes Russes'), with the latter subsequently marrying her daughter.
