Signed by the author to the flyleaf. Stoppard's play, through the character of British consular official Henry Carr, explores the coincidence of Lenin, James Joyce, and Tristan Tzara all being present in wartime Zrich - based on real-life events, a petty dispute over money owed from a theatrical production in which Carr had acted (Joyce found himself in the role of business manager) led to Joyce portraying Carr in the 'Circe' episode of his 'Ulysses', in the form of a drunken, foul-mouthed soldier who assaults Stephen Dedalus.
