Bookseller Notes
Inscribed by the author on the half-title: 'Keith and Pauline - after a long time! - love, Susan, Summer 1984'. The laid in Birmingham Post review slip is a clue to its provenance, carrying a note to the verso asking that the book be returned to Keith Brace, the paper's literary editor, as 'it is valuable to me'. The inscription refers to the fact that Hill was an old family friend, a sometime babysitter for their son.Hill's now classic variation on the theme of the ghost story, which begins on Christmas Eve - a masterful exercise in atmosphere and controlled horror.
