Rare Book
A scarce first edition of a book that has grown immeasurably in status since its publication late in the author's life - this copy with notable provenance, being that of composer William Brocklesby ('Bill') Wordsworth, a descendant of Christopher Wordsworth, the brother of the poet for whom his great-great-grandson was presumably named. Wordsworth had moved to Kincraig, in the shadow of the Cairngorms in the early 1960s, crediting the landscape with a direct and significant influence on his work. Now probably her best-known work, this was Shepherd's first book for more than forty years, following three novels and a collection of poetry - all of them steeped in the same landscape that she describes so richly here. Written 'during the latter years of the Second World War and those just after', the author's 'tale of my traffic with a mountain' is a modern classic of nature writing, celebrated by Robert Macfarlane among others.
