Bookseller Notes

Inscribed by the author on the title-page: 'Louis Marlow - After a delightful afternoon - 7 Sep. 1933'. The recipient is not named, but the nature of the inscription, in conjunction with the laid-in luggage label (marked 'Morrell'), permits some confidence in the identification of Lady Ottoline Morrell, prominent literary hostess, and her husband Philip.A scarce novel, in Gollancz's series of paperback originals. The printed dedication is to the author's erstwhile school-friend, T.F. Powys. Whilst at school, the author had cultivated a correspondence with Oscar Wilde, during the latter's exile in France - later associations included Frank Harris and Aleister Crowley.
