Bookseller Notes

With a gift inscription on the flyleaf: 'Karin Costelloe, from A.R.'. The recipient was a member of the Bloomsbury Group, who later married Virginia Woolf's brother, Adrian Stephen, both of them becoming psychoanalysts; she was the the sister of Ray Costelloe (later Strachey). 'A.R' is her aunt, her mother's sister, Alys Russell (ne Whitall Smith), then the wife of Bertrand Russell (though they would divorce the next year), and the sister of Logan Pearsall Smith. The engraved and hand-coloured design on Karin Costelloe's bookplate is uncredited, but most attractive - it is likely the work of someone in her circle, perhaps Elinor Darwin or Winifred Gill.
