Beneath his signature is a printed slip in Swedish, stating that 'the author has signed each copy of his novel that is for sale in Ume (where the book was written), as a token of the gratitude he feels towards the Ume people for the pleasant years he spent among them'.The author's first book, the tale of a female art student who suffers a nervous breakdown; written whilst Ross-MacDonald was teaching English in the north of Sweden, it was heavily based, he recalled, on conversations with 'Jon Silkin and David Mercer and their girlfriends' whilst the three lived together in Hampstead.
