Phillpotts was a Devonian author whose long career, spanning more than sixty years, included poetry and drama as well as novels. Dorothy Burroughes was an artist who studied at the Slade and who worked largely in the media of poster-design and book-illustration (including of her own writing for children) often with animals as their theme, making the present work a suitable subject for her talents.
