Published in France as 'Sous le pied de l'archange' in 1937, the English edition of this novel set on Mont-Saint-Michel ('austere symbol of the strength and goodness of life', blurb) is principally of note for the excellent dustjacket design by Bip Pares - depicting the Mount in silhouette, it advertises on its rear panel Patrick White's debut 'Happy Valley', puffed by quotes from Graham Greene and Herbert Read.

1939, pp. 285, crown 8vo, original pink cloth, backstrip lettered in gilt with a tiny errant thread to cloth at foot, slight lean to spine, edges slightly toned and spotted, contemporary ownership inscription to flyleaf, dustjacket by Bip Pares, the backstrip panel slightly sunned with a touch of shallow chipping at head, a couple of miniscule nicks, the rear panel with a couple of faint marks, very good
