Bookseller Notes

Inscribed by the author on the flyleaf: 'To my dear Oswell - The Mascot, from Mary. 8.3.32'. The recipient was the author Oswell Blakeston, associated with Bryher and the POOL Group, and a fellow resident of Cornwall, where he socialised with Butts - in her diaries, she refers to him as 'the fashionable young man'.Presentation copies of the author's works are scarce, and the dustjacket of this work, by her husband, is an uncommon survival. J.C. Squire, reviewing this work, admired the author's 'gift of the exact word and the pregnant image', considering that she 'may live to fulfil the promise that Katherine Mansfield showed' in advancing the art of the short story.
