Publisher's Synopsis
This collection of papers from the 1994 TMS Annual Meeting held in San Francisco, California, February 27-March 3, 1994. Artificial intelligence and knowledge-based systems are now entering the maturity stage of the development cycle. Demonstration of concept is no longer sufficient. For success, systems must be integrated with existing systems, both conventional and knowledge-based. Materials science and engineering needs knowledge-based systems to "deliver" expertise, experience and data to the engineering community. The papers presented in this volume provide proof of both the need for and value of such efforts.;Coverage includes: planning for materials process redesign; concept systems as an aid for sharing and reuse of knowledge bases in materials science; using knowledge-based systems to define materials technology in the aircraft design/build process; feature-based design of gates and risers in a casting; and an interactive, integrated and intelligent system for power materials design and process planning.
