Bookseller Notes

11: A scarce book, the second in the author's 'A Scots Quair' trilogy: 'a vivid picture of the hardship and injustice that [Gibbon] sees as an inevitable part of the capitalist structure [...] The main interest lies with Robert Colquohoun and his struggle to find his own solution to the ills of the time [...] Much of the novel is concerned with differing political views about how this terrible situation can be remedied. Fascism, Scottish nationalism, labour socialism are all examined and dismissed' (ODNB).Though not a pleasing example, the dustjacket is rarely seen - and rich in information, both verbal and visual, the front panel depicting Gibbon's setting of Segget (also mapped on the endpapers) with the War memorial at its centre. For Chris Guthrie, her son Ewan, and second husband Colquohoun, the 'problems of the post-War years are upon them' and 'limned in detail by a brush with a brush now as brutal as Hogarth's, now as tender as Rossetti's' (blurb).
