Bookseller Notes

Inscribed by the author on the flyleaf: 'For Michael Armstrong, from Conrad Aiken, 1964'. The recipient was the nephew of Martin Armstrong and Jessie McDonald - the latter was Aiken's first wife, their marriage dissolving at the time of this book's publication, after which she married the author's close friend. In the year of this inscription, Michael Armstrong had written a memoir of his childhood that drew the ire of his aunt for its revelation of family matters - a perspective perhaps hardened by Aiken's own memoir, 'Ushant', in which an unflattering portrait of her second husband appears. The first of Aiken's novels, reflecting his interest in psychoanalysis.
