Excerpt from �ber Schule, Universit�t, Academie: Eine in der Academie der Wissenschaften am 8 November 1849 von Jacob Grimm Gehaltne Vorlesung
Dieser tage trat, aus mehr als einer ursache, es an mich nahe, einen die genossenschaft, der wir zu geh�ren, unmittelbar betreffenden, ohne zweifel auch von vielen unter uns oft erwogenen gegenstand in neue betrachtung zu ziehen. Rechenschaft gehen wollte ich mir �ber das eigentliche verh�ltnis der academie zu andern wissenschaftlichen anstalten, uber das was bei ver schiedenen anlassen academisch sei oder nicht. Auf unser statut zur�ck gewiesen zu werden besorge ich kaum, da dessen schon mehrmals (am letz ten 1812 und 1838) eingetretene �nderung selbst darthut wie wenig dieser verein von gelehrten m�nnern f�r in sich abgeschlossen und fertig zu erachten oder gegen der zeit und des allgemeinen menschlichen fortgangs allm�chtigen einflufs unempfindlich sei. Das uns bei der stiftung �bergeworfne erste kleid haben wir l�ngst verwachsen, und die muster nach welchen es geschnitten wurde gelten auch sonst nicht mehr, so wenig als f�r irgend eine der deut schen universit�ten die Heidelberger satzung von 1346 mafsgebend geblieben ist. Dennoch darf es ein gl�ck heifsen und eine wolthat, dafs damals zu Berlin oder in der Pfalz halb tactvoll, halb unbewust, das rechte und an gemessene getroffen wnrde. Desto ruhiger abwarten oder im geiste voraus ahnen d�rfen wir, die academie werde �ber lang oder kurz sich zu verj�ngen und erweitern alle f�higkeit in sich tragen, und wohin mein blick gerichtet sei soll hernach unverhalten sein.
