Publisher's Synopsis
Judo is the 'gentle way' but has still managed to forge a route into the modern Olympics as a combat sport. It was developed out of jujutso (or jiu Jitsu) by Jigoro Kano, in a nineteenth century Japan then in the process of rejecting its traditional ways in favour of more western ideas. Its development evolved as a response, by Kano, to the culture of school bullying witnessed as a fourteen year old. He aligned the martial art with the concepts of Chinese Taoism to give it a philosophical edge, thus emphasising the idea that learning judo is a mental, as well as a physical, journey.
