Excerpt from Wood: A Manual of the Natural History and Industrial Applications of the Timbers of Commerce
IN an attempt, such as this, to cover a Wide ground Within a book of small compass perfect accuracy cannot be hoped for, completeness is impossible and originality is neither expected nor desirable. Rather, however, than burden the body of the book with constant acknowledgments of indebtedness, I have thought it better to add a bibliographical appendix, indicating those works from Which I have borrowed most freely. For Figs. 1, 7, 16, 17 and 29 I am indebted to the courtesy of Mr. Francis Darwin and the Syndicate of the Cambridge University Press; for Figs. 10, 18, 21 - 23 and 27 to that of Professor Marshall Ward and Messrs.
