Publisher's Synopsis
The Letters of 1, 2 & 3 John were written to encourage followers of Jesus to remain faithful to the truth. Believers are challenged to look at contrasting themes such as walking in the light instead of darkness, truth versus lies and deception, loving God more than loving the world, and the meaning of true fellowship and community rather than shallowness. This 7-session study not only reveals the heart of John but also the heart of Jesus. Kelly addresses the topic of what love is and how God has a different kind of love than what the world defines.Session 2: Fellowship (31:34)—Fellowship is essential for the Christian life. In this session Kelly presents the challenges of creating fellowship with others and how we need to be intentional in our relationships. She dives deeper into what it means to have fellowship with God and others bringing fulfillment to our lives.Session 3: Walking in the Light (30:27)—What does it mean that God is Light and that there is no darkness in Him? And why should we want to walk in the light with Him? Using both passages from the Gospel of John and the letter of 1 John Kelly explores how God is not trying to hide from us or trick us. He wants us to know Him and to be fully known by Him.Session 4: Knowing and Assurance (33:16)—In this session Kelly compares and contrasts the different levels of knowledge and how they impact our beliefs and faith in God. Many people know about God in an intellectual way but others know Him in a whole different level as the Son of God. There are markers throughout Scripture that remind us what it means to know Him and to know Him with assurance.Session 5: Abide, Dwell, and Remain (29:13)—Abiding, dwelling, remaining are all concepts in the letters of 1,2,3 John. But how can we really walk as Jesus did as a way of life - abiding in Him, dwelling with Him, and remaining in Him? This session takes a look a the way Jesus walked depending upon His heavenly Father. Like Jesus we can walk as He walked, care like He cared, think like He thought, and bless like He blessed.Session 6: Love (34:24)—Love is often a difficult concept to grasp. The world has distorted what love truly is and hindered our view of love. In this session Kelly focuses on what love is and what it is not - including how obedience is always a demonstration of real love and completion. Love and obedience are intertwined. Obedience is a significant expression of our love for God. It is the greatest gift we can give Him.Session 7: Keep Yourself From Idols (31:56)—Keeping yourself from idols is not something that most of us think about on a daily basis. Our idols are often more subtle and hidden. In this closing session Kelly reminds us to sit at Jesus feet and to give Him everything.
