Publisher's Synopsis

The Aftermath Project is a nonprofit organization committed to telling the other half of the story of conflict. Through grant competitions and partnerships with other institutions, the organization attempts to broaden the publics understanding of what it takes for individuals to learn to live again following warfare and to address lingering wounds while struggling to create new avenues for peace. War Is Only Half the Story presents the winners of the Aftermath Projects first annual grant competition, open to working photographers worldwide who cover the aftermath of conflict. The imagery in this volume represents some of todays finest, most challenging documentary work, and the diverse approaches to the genre. Magnum Photos member JIM GOLDBERG is considered a true innovator within the documentary field. His first-place project, The New Europeans, is a richly layered collection of images and words, depicting the insurmountable difficulties faced by refugees, migrants, asylum seekers, and trafficked people and their indomitable will to remake their lives. Widely published and recognized with numerous awards, second-place winner WOLF BÖWIG has worked internationally for over fifteen years. The Forgotten Island: Narratives of War in Sierra Leone tells the story of conflict through the eyes of fiveyear- old Morie, the sole survivor of an attack on Bonthe Island. War Is Only Half the Story also presents the work of three finalists and their proposed projects: ANDREW STANBRIDGE (postwar reconstruction in Laos); ASIM RAFIQUI (the hidden costs of war and peace-building efforts in Kashmir); and PAULA LUTTRINGER (a survey of sites in Argentina where women and their children were abducted between 1976 and 1983).
