This book is a collection of seven papers presented at a special session on Voyages and Exploration in the North Atlantic at the 19th International Congress of Historical Sciences in Oslo, Norway, in 2000. This session was in commemoration of the 1000th anniversary of the first Nordic voyages to the mainland of North America, but the papers also extend the story of Atlantic exploration far forward into the 1800s.
