Excerpt from Vergleichendes Worterbuch der Gothischen Sprache, Vol. 1
Die nachste Aufgabe dieser Arbeit ist die Durchforschung der gothischen Sprache von ihrer lexikalischen Seite, so weit sich diese von der grammatischen sondern lat. Die weiteren Aufgaben sind zwar dieser nachsten untergeordnet, werden aber, nach einem unerlalichen Grundsatze aller gewissenhaften Forschung, zugleich als Selbstzwecke verfolgt. Sie bestehn in der Durchforschung aller mir zuganglichen Sprachen welche durch Verwandtschaft oder Mischung in irgend einer Beziehung zu der gothischen stehn oder zu stehn scheinen. Diese Beziehung durchlauft alle erreich baren Grade der Entfernung von der nachsten und sichersten Verwandtschaft bis zu dem fernsten und ungewissesten Verhaltnie. Es handelt sich um die Stellung des gothischen Volkes und seiner Besitzthumer, vor allen seiner Sprache, zu allen Volkern, mit welchen es sich von seiner Wiege an bis zu dem Untergange seiner Besonderheit beruhrte. Zunachst um seine Blutsverwandt schaft in allen ihren Graden, bis in die fernsten und gungsten Entwickelungen und Verzweigungen der einzelnen verwand Stamme hinein. Sodann um die auf Wanderungen, in Mischungen, durch den mannichfachsten Verkehr empfangenen und gespendeten Guter, auf die mehr zufalligen Beruhrungen mit verwandten und unverwandten Sprachen und Volkern. Um diese Verhaltnisse im Groen und Ganzen anzuschauen, mu zuvor alles Einzelne genau und allseitig besichtigt werden; keine Wortform, keine Sprachtrummer, keine vereinzelte oder entartete Mundart sei der Betrachtung unwerth geachtet. Ich zeichne hier naturlich nur meine Aufgaben nicht das Ma ihrer Erfullung.
