Salle d'estaminet de campagne. Porte basse � un seul battant au fond, donnant sur la rue au village. De chaque c�t� de la porte, fen�tre � rideaux de mousseline blanche relev�s par un noeud de couleur. Au second plan gauche, un esca lier conduisant � la salle de danse. Tables. Chaises, bancs. Le comptoir au fond, � droite. C'est jour de ducasse. Durant tout l'acte. On entend le vacarme du bal: cris de filles qu'on chatouille de trop pr�s, braillements de gars qui s'excitent, saccades de gros souliers sur le plancher, bourr�es scandant la musique. L'orchestre, dans la coulisse. Est compos� d'une clarinette, un cornet �_ pis ton, nu bugle et un trombone. Deux servantes vont et viennent, apportent des Verres pleins sur des plateaux, remportent les vides, re�oivent la monnaie. Aux tables, des hommes l�g�rement gris. Des buveurs se parlent nez � nez avec des gestes amples. Le cabaretier, � son comptoir, rince les verres et emplit les' chopes. Quand elles sont inoccup�es, les servantes vont s'asseoir'au fond, les mains dans les poches de leur tablier. Elle; se font, � voix basse, des confidences entrecoup�es d' �clats de rire. La porte du fond et celle de la salle de danse sont grandes ouvertes. On entre et on sort continuellement. Au lever du rideau, le bal bat son plein. L'orchestre loue une valse.
