Publisher's Synopsis
This collection of photographs depicts a wide array of the mysterious prehistoric standing-stone sites around England and Wales. The sites featured vary from the well-known stone circles such as Stonehenge, Avebury and the Rollright Stones to obscure and rarely-photographed megaliths like The Tingle Stone situated on Princess Anne's private estate, the triangular-shaped, holed Tolven Stone at Gweek in Cornwall and Woeful Dane's Bottom in Gloucestershire.;Accompanying each photograph are a number of short texts collected from a variety of sources - principally folklore, legends and myths - documenting the superstitions and unusual names associated with the sites. Most of the conjectures regarding astronomical alignments, ley lines, sacrificial sites, solar and lunar temples, have never been conclusively proven. This book steers clear of astronomical equations and measurements, recording instead the fascinating variety of literature, opinions and fantasies inspired by the presence of these ancient stones on the British landscape.
