Publisher's Synopsis

The Lady of Blossholme is a 1909 historical novel by H. Rider Haggard. It is set during the time of Henry VIII, and features the Pilgrimage of Grace. Written in 1907. The story opens on 12/31/1535 during the reign of Henry VIII with most of the events happening in 1536. It is the time of Henry VIII, Thomas Cromwell, the dissolution of the monasteries and a rebellion against the king. It is one of Haggard's more straight forward historical adventures, with hardly any fantasy elements with a stereotypical hero and heroine who have many adventures, King Henry and Cromwell put in appearances and evil men plot against the good guys. It opens with Sir John Foterell, lord of Blosscome, having a clash with the villainous abbot of Blossholm Abbey in which the abbort is using bribery and skullduggery to obtain a large portion of Foterell's holdings with the possibility of all of his lands. Foterell seeks to use evidence he has to discredit the abbot and is murdered before he can do so.
