The Gold Scarab is a story by Edgar Allan Poe (1843). Its protagonist is William Legrand, a misanthrope passionate about entomology. Together with an old black servant, Jupiter, Legrand lives on an island off the coast of South Carolina where he finds a coded message that indicates the location of Captain Kidd's fabulous treasure. Poe, an excellent amateur cryptanalyst, explains in detail how the message is deciphered using statistical techniques.
