Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from The Embrittling Action of Sodium Hydroxide on Soft Steel
Temperature, concentration, and continuity may, therefore, be important factors. Moreover, the soluble salts remaining in the water from these two particular districts, at least, consist almost entirely of sodium carbonate and hydroxide with only a minimum of sulphate and chloride present. The inhibitive effect or perhaps simply the diluting effect Of larger percentages Of sulphates and chlorides may be a determining feature. It is evident, therefore, that many factors enter into the problem, and it has seemed wise to confine our attention to one factor only with the definite understanding that the immediate Objective has been a contribution to our knowledge Of the embrittling process and the conditions under which it may be brought about.
