Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from The Character Building Readers
The spirit of the Seventh Reader is that of Aspiration and worthy Enterprise. It is the spirit of the young knight who, having fed his student mind with high and higher conceptions of what is noble and to be emulated, prepares for his own career of service by fresh and earnest reminders of the world's great need and of the paths that have been made glorious by the footprints of those who have refused to wander from the pursuits of truth and justice. All the qualities of a wise and valiant knight hood appear and appeal in these lessons selected from among the more stirring episodes of wholesome life and fiction. In their study it is borne in upon the young reader that a timely Obedience is not incompatible with a fiery Independence of spirit; Prudence and Temperance with the most warlike Ardor in assertion and defence of great causes; Contentment and Modesty with the Pride of the honest man and brave soldier; Charity and Toler ance and Patience with noble Indignation against all that is mean, dishonest, or cruel. Stimulation and restraint go hand in hand in this training more distinctly than heretofore.
