Repoussant l'hypothese d'une promiscuite illimitee a l'e poque la plus reculee de l'histoire, l'auteur s'est efforce d'etablir que les familles matriarcale, patriarcale et individu elle n'etaient que les trois phases distinctes d'un meme de ve10ppement. Cette evolution s'est accomplie ou tend a s'ac complir chez des peuples qui n'ont de commun ni la race, ni la religion. On aurait tort par consequent d'en eliminercelle qui nous est propre. Le matriarcat a existe parmi les tribus aryennes: il a laisse des survivances dans leurs an ciennes lois, dans leurs coutumes et usages encore en vogue. L'autorite maritale et paternelle n'a evolue que lentement au sein d'une societe matriarcale. Son avenement amena l'eta blissement de la famille patriarcale, qui, comme l'atteste le monde slave, ne cede que lentement sa place a la famille individuelle. Force de condenser ses etudes dans un petit nombre de lecons, l'auteur n'a pu donner au tableau du communisme agraire qui caracterise la periode la plus ancienne de la pr0priete fonciere tout l'acheve qu'il requiert. De plus amples developpements ont ete donnes au meme sujet dans le livre que l'auteur a publie il y a dix ans en russe et qui a pour titre: La commune villageoise et les causes de sa dissolution. Ce livre a ete lui-meme complete par une serie d'articles publies dans le Journal juridique a Moscou. C'est dans ces articles que la theorie de M. Fustel de Coulanges sur la priorite de la pr0priete individuelle a ete discutee tout au long, a l'aide de documents recueillis par les cartulaires allemands. C'est a ces articles qu'il faudrait par consequent recourir pour se rendre compte de tous les faits sur les quels l'auteur du present Tableau etablit sa theorie d'une evolution spontanee du communisme agraire au sein d'une societe patriarcale et de l'eclosion non moins naturelle de la pr0priete privee, au fur et a mesure de la dissolution de la communaute tant familiale que villageoise.
