Publisher's Synopsis

This work introduces researchers to the Spearman rank-order correlation coefficient. This measures the level of association between two variables which should be ordinal, interval or ratio level. The Spearman rank-order correlation coefficient assesses whether a positive or negative monotonic relationship exists between the two variables. This example uses a subset of data from the General Social Survey 2012. We explore whether there is a relationship between a person's highest level of education (ordinal) and their income (ratio). To justify the relevance of education in modern day society, it is important that this relationship is found to be a positive one - the example establishes this.
