Karl Eugen �tait un souverain magnifique et autori taire. Il pr�tendait faire le bonheur de ses sujets, mais entendait bien ne proc�der qu'� sa guise, sans prendre l'avis des int�ress�s. Il se croyait de grands dons de p�dagogue; il surveillait en personne son �cole, p�pi ni�re de futurs officiers ou de futurs fonctionnaires; il accueillait avec d�lices les louanges de commande que lui d�cernaient ses prot�g�s. Schiller a d�, comme bien d'autres, lui adresser des discours ou des �p�tres adulatoires. Mais les sept ann�es qu'il a pass�es dans cet internat, d'organisation et de discipline toutes mi litaires, ne lui ont laiss� que d'assez p�nibles soave nirs. C'est l�, sans doute, qu'il a re�u toute sa formation philosophique et litt�raire, et il a eu la chance d'y conna�tre quelques ma�tres excellents. Mais il a tou jours eu le sentiment qu'une tyrannique autorit� bri dait son libre g�nie. Il voulait �tre po�te; or le duc �tait d�cid� � faire de lui un fonctionnaire. Pour �chapper du moins � la carri�re des armes, Schiller r�solut, � seize ans, de se vouer �la m�decine. Cinq ans plus tard, � vingt et un ans, il quittait l'acad�mie militaire pour devenir m�decin d'un des r�giments qui tenaient garnison � Stuttgart; le duc ne lui avait d'ail leurs pas accord� rang d'officier.
