Rare Book
A scarce volume of Great War poetry, by a Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion of the Norfolk Regiment, as the heading on the accompanying ALs from the author, dated to June 1919, clarifies. The letter is to Lady Ottoline Morrell, thanking her for having entertained at Garsington Manor a year ago 'a party of war-worn officers from Somerville', recalling that 'to one [i.e., Barber himself] you gave a copy of Siegfried Sassoon's most recent poems' - which has served as inspiration, for 'this officer has since brought out a book of his own, of which he would very much like you to accept the enclosed copy'. Barber's verse, the War its theme throughout, is various in content and style, and in general rather more light-hearted than his model.
