Inscribed at the head of the dedication page: 'For Blanche F[?] Wolf, With many thanks & good wishes, Michael Strange, 1929'.The verse on show here is unconventional, somewhat in fulfilment of the pseudonym selected by Blanche Oelrichs for her literary work - though the masculine nature of the mask is at variance with the frontispiece photograph of the author, who by this time was enjoying the fame it brought rather than cultivating the anonymity for which it had originally been adopted (in an attempt for it not to impact her social standing). From a wealthy New York family, Oelrichs for a while followed an expected course, her success as a debutante yielding marriage to a wealthy diplomat; but her literary interests and political activities in pursuit of suffrage took her away from that world; involvement in the theatre brought a new relationship, with actor John Barrymore, whom she married in 1920 - they divorced in the year of this publication.
