From this day onward, the of June 1852, the Kanuri-language again constituted the chief medium of my eonversation and even of my study as far as my constitution allowed it, su?'ering greatly as I was in consequence of the many fatigues of the journey, and still more debilitated by mental anxiety and disappointment. While thus passing through territories infested by hostile tribes, and inundated by the heavy reine of the season, the eommnnicative and well educated kaaella corrected and completed my glossary and my collection of Kanuri-phrases most cheerf1?ly. This study I afterwards continued in Kukawa, where, besides Billama, I had two principal masters, und authorities, both of them belonging to the highest rank of society in these countries, and both possessing the highest culture of mind of which these people are capable; one of these persons was the Hedi Edris (tr. III, p. The other Sitima Makaremma (tr. II p. The latter being the more clever of the two, und capable of rendering greater service in this respect as he belonged to the court of the old Kautiri-dynasty of the Sefua, but being such a despicable old rogue and so very exacting, that I could not make all the use of him which it would have been desirable.
