Excerpt from Romancero de la Guerra de Independencia, Vol. 1: Por Varios Autores
Por último, habiendo aprobado y aplau dido la idea de publicar este romancero algunos de nuestros poetas contempo ráneos, éstos bondadosamente ofrecieron al Editor escribir algunos más, con los cuales ha podido completarse este primer tomo, y reservarse otros, que se incluirán en el tomo siguiente.
Para los Relatos de episodios de la guerra de independencia, se ha contado con un material riquísimo y variado, es parcido en multitud de periódicos anti guos; y se han escogido los artículos de escritores de mediados del siglo pasado, porque ellos conservan todavía el calor y el tinte vivo que les comunicó la proxi midad de los sucesos, la tradición oral re cogida de labios de testigos presenciales, y la fe y el entusiasmo de los que tuvie ron por nuestros héroes mayor admiración y devoción tal vez que nosotros. En esto queremos referirnos á los relatos escritos por Payno, Prieto, Revilla, Otero, Alta mirano, Riva Palacio, etc.
Por 'último, la colección de Biografías de Caudillos y Héroes de la independeu cia, ha sido enteramente rehecha por el inteligente historiógrafo Lic. D. Alejan dro _villaseñor y Villaseñor, (enya reputa ción de diligente, sensato é imparcial es tá bien asegurada. En ella figuran no solo las vidas de personajes que andan en boca de todos, (desgraciadamente con errores que no han podido desterrarse, ) sino las de muchos héroes ignorados, olvidadosó preteridos, a quienes no se les ha citado jamás, ni menos se les ha hecho la justi cia que merecen.
