Cardinal Mazarin, the true power in France, is plotting to destroy the nobility and centralise authority to the throne. The nobles have once again been pushed into rebellion bringing the country to the brink of civil war.
Incarcerated in Paris after his betrayal, Jacob is determined to escape and find his brother, who was injured while attempting to assassinate the French king. Meanwhile, enemies old and new are intent on killing him as they use the country's turmoil for wicked purposes.
