Publisher's Synopsis
Acupuncture is the most controversial method of non-pharmacological pain control in contemporary medicine. This form of treatment originated in China some 4000 years ago. It has been of interest in the US for scarcely a decade, although widely used in Europe since early in this century and universally acclaimed for it's pain-relieving qualities. In this manual we have reviewed evidence in support of a physiological basis for acupuncture. We describe methods for needle application and illustrate examples of motor, trigger point and neurotome area stimulation for the treatment of pain and other conditions. The use of this approach has permitted a rational interpretation of the beneficial results obtained and permitted modification of treatments as necessary on a scientific basis.
