A sharp drop in pork supplies and higher retail prices for red meats should strengthen prices for poultry and eggs. The higher prices, combined with only modest increases in production costs, are expected to improve returns to producers.
Egg output during March November is expected to trail last year, possibly by 1 percent. The size of the lay ing flock may remain smaller than a year ago, because the number Of replacement pullets has been below a year earlier. Also, the laying flock is older, and more hens have been force molted than a year ago, and this could hold down the rate of lay.
Prices for cartoned large eggs in New York averaged 78 cents a dozen during December February, up from 76 cents last year. Prices in the second quarter averaged slightly above last year's 70 cents. For the second half, they may strengthen and average 75 to 79 cents, up from 71 cents last year.
