Sir Digby Kirtling, self-made millionaire and would-be member of the landed gentry, has renovated a crumbling manor house in Gloucestershire. He has grand plans for the place, employing an interior designer and commissioning a copy of an impressionist painting - replacing the principal figures in the original with himself and his employees. A party is thrown for the unveiling - but celebration soon turns to tragedy when his estate manager Una May, is found dead on the grounds, strangled with her own necklace. Sir Digby becomes the prime suspect when a post-mortem reveals that Una was pregnant with his child. Sukey Reynold, Crime Scene Investigator, is reluctantly drawn into an attempt by Sir Digby's housekeeper and devoted mistress to prove his innocence. But when another murder takes place and Sir Digby is again the main suspect, Sukey has doubts about his guilt...doubts that nearly cause her to become the third victim.
