The Second World War has been declared, and Pete decides to leave his native Australia for England and joins the RAF. But before he leaves, he makes a promise to his mother - he will meet up with her old friend in Liverpool. But, with half the city reduced to ruins, Pete arrives to find her house destroyed and her daughter missing.
